Power outage returns

Saturday, 6 September 2014

Load-shedding has again grabbed news headlines. Dhaka City dwellers are now passing through hard times without the required electricity. Intermittent power outages have been fast becoming a part of our urban life. In the sweltering heat of Bhadra, life at times becomes terrible.
Due to frequent power failures, water pumps in the city's many areas remain inoperative. It leads to a complete stoppage to residential water supply, thus hindering the day-to-day household chores. Many areas are even deprived of the water for drinking and bathing.  Against this backdrop of urban miseries without electricity, the power generation authorities should immediately ensure sufficient supplies of electricity. Although early in the summer power supply had been relatively normal in Dhaka this year, the situation started deteriorating lately.
The government should embark on a long-term plan to mitigate the power problem as the demand will go up with time.
