Power outages hit many areas in capital badly
FE Report | Wednesday, 6 May 2015
The failure of Ulan-Dhanmondi power transmission line, coupled with technical glitch in transformers, affected electricity consumers in many areas in the capital Tuesday, said officials.
Two transformers went out of operation from 9.0 am at Dhanmondi, which resulted in frequent electricity outages in the entire area and its adjoining areas, a senior official of the Dhaka Power Distribution Company Ltd (DPDC) told the FE.
The electricity supply system in the capital deteriorated further when the Ulan-Dhanmondi transmission line tripped in the afternoon, the official added.
Different city areas, especially Motijheel, Purana Paltan, Gulistan, Bijoynagar, Kawran Bazar, Paribagh, Azimpur and Dhanmondi were affected badly due to the electricity outages.
Backup power systems like instant power supply (IPS) and uninterrupted power system (UPS) failed to provide electricity in the absence of sufficient grid supply.
The DPDC officials assured the citizens that the repairing works were continuing to bring normalcy in the electricity supply system.
Meanwhile, the country generated the highest quantity of electricity of around 7,658 megawatt (MW) Monday when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formally inaugurated four new power plant projects. These projects have a total generation capacity of around 312 MW, a senior official of Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) told the FE.
The country's previous highest electricity generation of 7,571 MW was recorded a couple of weeks ago, he said.
