PPP fiasco

Saturday, 9 November 2019

Only one project out of 74 listed as public-private partnership initiatives with the government is now in operation. Five projects are under implementation, and agreements were signed for seven more, a retired Secretary, Fauzul Kabir Chowdhury, wrote in a Bangla daily, referring to the list prepared by the PPP office. This is the state of the PPP although the government prepared relevant policy in 2010 and a law in 2015.
It was argued that powerful quarters have not taken the PPP initiative into serious consideration while ad hoc measures like quick rental plants thwarted possible success of PPP projects. There was a lot of hope when the PPP initiative was introduced through national budget. The PPP failure is a discouraging case. It is now essential to restore trust in such initiatives.
