PPP in safe migration management stressed

Monday, 13 December 2010

Speakers at a seminar called for protecting the rights of migrant workers, who are playing a significant role in our national economy and stressed public-private participation (PPP) in safe migration management, reports UNB.
BRAC organised the seminar titled 'Public private participation in safe migration management' at its Centre in the city Sunday.
The seminar was told that more than seven million Bangladeshis are now working and living abroad. Though economic recession has imposed a negative impact on the flow of migrants, however, it will hopefully stand up soon.
Bangladesh has earned a record amount of US$ 9.6 billion as remittances during 2008-2009 fiscal year. In 2009, the amount was again nearly $10 billion (Tk 700.0 billion) though the period was hit by the global economic recession (which hardly had any negative impact on the total remittance flow to Bangladesh). The remittance remained almost steady though the migrating population got down to almost half (475,000) in 2009.
