NILPHAMARI, July 15: District Fisheries Office of Nilphamari has undertaken a comprehensive project to cultivate lobster in Teesta irrigation canal in Nilphamari. Sources said the district fisheries office recently released 2000 fry into the canal water between the canal's Chanderhat and Kukhapara segment having a length of nearly 30 kilometers. This project is patronised by 22 infantry division commander of Saidpur Brigadier General Safiul Alam Belal.

Sources said the fry were collected from Parbotipur government hatchery.

When contacted District Fisheries Officer M.I Goldar said if the experimental project in the fresh water is proved successful it would unlock the potential of prawn culture in 275-km long main secondary canal of the Teesta Irrigation Project.

He said if the project is successful new prawn hatcheries would grow in the region. He added the department of fisheries would observe the growth rate and the survival rate of prawn in the natural water environment. The sources said the fisheries office has made some artificial shelters for the fry in the canal water like tree bushes, branches of trees, plastic pipes and so on but no external food or extra nursing has been provided. After six months it is supposed that the fry would attain harvesting size of 80 to 100 grammes.
