Pre-poll violence and loss of Tk 110 billion
Saturday, 12 April 2014
Recently, the World Bank (WB) has estimated that the pre-poll violence has cost our fragile economy a staggering Tk 110 billion and the figure is mind-boggling. It surely will take a long time for our economy to recover the loss. What the ruling party has got from the one sided-election we don't know but common people have hugely suffered psychologically and financially and uncertainty is yet to be over.
The ruling party has been facing immense pressure from home and abroad to arrange a fresh election as in the last general election the result didn't depict the true expectation of the common people. We, the common people, want to live peacefully and elect our leaders. We don't want the whimsical election of leaders in the name of election. Voterless flawed election like the 10th parliamentary one harms democratic process and also hampers the stability of a society.
As a voter, I have been deprived of my voting right as the candidate in my constituency won uncontested to my utter dismay. More than half of the voters could not exercise their voting rights. We hope the ruling party will settle the issue of fresh election so that we don't have repetition of pre-poll violence and destruction as our economy cannot simply afford it. The onus is on the ruling party leaders to bring our country under the true democratic rule with the mandate of the countrymen.
