Friday, 16 April 2010

President Zillur Rahman urged the Education Ministry and the University Grants Commission (UGC) to prepare annual assessment report about academic standard of private universities for greater interest of the nation, reports UNB.
He was addressing the 1st convocation of City University at the city's Bangabandhu International Conference Centre Thursday.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid attended the function as special guest while Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique was the convocation speaker.
Mentioning that the private universities have been created to cater to needs of the country, the President said that only except a few, questions arose among the people about the quality of education provided by most of the private universities.
"There is also question about the tuition fees charged by the private universities," he added.
The President said that the universities would have to play a responsible role in building a happy and prosperous country for fulfilling the expectations of the nation.
He also said that all-out development of the society depends on the nature and quality of higher education.
The higher education, he said, should be of a quality that would enrich the new students with various branches of knowledge and sciences.
Congratulating the new graduates, the President asked them never to compromise with untruth and injustice in the rest of their lives and also not to forget the motherland during their stay even anywhere of the world.
"You'll hold the spirit of the liberation war in your thoughts and also reflect it in your deeds," he said, adding that they should learn the true history of the great liberation war and about the national heroes.
A total of 381 students have been conferred on the degrees on the convocation while five students were awarded gold medals for their outstanding results.
