Preparing for the next urban disaster

Thursday, 11 April 2019

The sale of fire extinguishers hit a record high this past week following the flurry of fire incidents across Dhaka city. Both fire-fighters and civilians alike are taking ample preparations to douse any fire that can break out. The concerned authorities have formed committees to inspect, implement and ensure fire-safety standards in buildings. This is very positive.
It is thus important now to shift attention to the possibilities of an earthquake hitting Dhaka. Are we adequately prepared for such a disaster? A significant number of buildings in Dhaka city were not constructed in accordance with the building code. There are numerous buildings across Dhaka city which will be reduced to dust and rubble if a major earthquake hits.
Yes, it will cost a significant portion of taxpayer money to inspect every single building across Dhaka city and even more to demolish the faulty ones. Furthermore, an even larger portion will need to go towards the development of the collective intellect of our society so that future buildings follow all the guidelines. Legal steps should be taken against the violators.
