SOUTHERN University Bangladesh is one of the degree awarding higher seats of learning in Bangladesh, founded in the year 1998 and duly approved by the government under the Private University Act 1992.It is located at Chittagong, in the southern part of Bangladesh. It is not merely established as an institute of higher education, rather its prime objective is to build up a group of well-educated, efficient and honest human beings, who will be moved by patriotism and will contribute to socio-economic and moral development of the nation. Southern University accomplishes its mission by presenting a personal approach to education through a small, congenial and diverse community in which all its constituencies share in the teaching, research, and regional service activities of the institution. Every educational programme at Southern acknowledges its commitment to an integrated relationship between the professional/ technical and liberal arts fields. That relationship fosters the development of students as contributing citizens, viable professionals and caring individuals. Southern has fully accredited courses, which are recognised nationally and internationally and provide students with pathways to quality international universities of the world.
Brief history: Southern University Bangladesh originated from the establishment of Institute of Management and Information Technology (IMIT) in 1998 as an affiliated higher educational centre of USA and UK Universities. After successful operation of IMIT for a number of years, the promoters of IMIT namely Mr. Sarwar Jahan and Mrs. Ishrat Jahan conceived the idea of establishing a private university at Chittagong to cater to the increasing higher educational needs of this port city. On the recommendation of University grants commission, the government of Bangladesh accorded approval to this private university on 26 November 2002 under the name of "Southern University". The university started its academic activities on 14 January 2003. The university is presently governed by Southern University Foundation comprising a group of reputed businessmen and educationists.
An overview: Southern University offers higher educational programmes in eight academic disciplines under three separate faculties namely (i) Faculty of Arts, Social Science and Law, (ii) Faculty of Business Administration and (iii) Faculty of Science and Engineering. All programmes have been carefully designed in order to satisfy the needs of job market at home and abroad. Efforts have been made to enhance the practical orientation of the courses so that effective human resource can be developed. Programmes develop the student's knowledge of the theory and practice and an understanding of the codes of professional responsibility. Interactive teaching methods, case study, internship and research project assignments are employed to develop the graduates properly in keeping with the demand of time. The university lays emphasis on the arrangement of co-curricular activities on a regular basis to develop the inherent potentialities of the students. In order to ensure quality education, Southern University emphasizes on creating a conducive learning environment through notable infrastructure development, employment of highly qualified and experienced faculty members, and creation of modern laboratory facilities and regular arrangement of seminars, workshops and discussion programmes. In the present campus at Mehedibag, Chittagong, Southern University has been operating in four multistoried buildings where more than fifty thousand square feet space are available for use as class rooms, labs, conference and auditorium hall, library, departmental and administrative offices. The university has planned to develop its permanent campus at the outskirt of Chittagong City. It has been working systematically to develop its permanent campus with all sorts of modern facilities in a couple of years.
Southern University has developed organisation culture comprised of certain unique values including teamwork, cooperation, empathy, non-discrimination, skill development and accountability. The university has BNCC Unit, Free Legal Advice Centre, SPEED (Southern's Professional Education for Executive Development) and Business and Society Forum, which differentiate this university from other private universities of Bangladesh.
Academic calendar: Southern University operates its programme on tri-semester basis except for Department of Pharmacy. There are three semesters in an academic year: Spring, Summer and Fall.
Admission policy: New students are admitted throughout the year, for spring, summer and fall semesters. Each applicant is assessed as an individual, by evaluating his or academic profile, work experience, professional and personal maturity, and patterns of success. For 4-year undergraduate programme, at least a second division or minimum CGPA 2.5/5.0 in the S.S.C. and H.S.C. examination or five subjects O-level and two major subjects in A-level or any of these equivalent examinations are required for admission into Southern University Bangladesh.
Academic support:
Southern University provides a full range of services to its students and alumni through information about employers, salaries, career and financial assistance. It serves students and alumni for effective interview skills, self-marketing to the business community, resume writing and develop effective business communications. The university helps its students on career planning, job placement and internship. It provides the students with financial aid in the form of tuition waiver and scholarship based on their merit.
Publication facilities:
Southern University publishes a tri-semester basis newsletter, entitled "Southern University News", where all academic and extra curricular activities are portrayed briefly. Moreover, the university publishes an annual journal, entitled "Journal of Business and Society (JBS)". The publication cell of the university has already published a few number of text books for the students from Southern University Press and some of them are to be published soon.
Other facilities: Modern laboratory facilities are needed in the science and engineering departments to make education and training effective. Keeping this in view, Southern University has developed eight modern Pharmacy labs in which 22 practical courses are conducted. There are six electronics and electrical, four civil engineering laboratories and a number of computer labs for use by the concerned students. There also exists a language lab, in order to develop the communication skills of the students. Numerous exciting, campus-wide events are planned and coordinated by the Business Club, Law Club, Cultural Club and BNCC on a regular basis. The university has a library comprised of wide varieties of books, which has a separate section for dictionaries, encyclopedias, world almanac and a collage of valuable books. The library has regular supply of newspaper and magazines related to the subjects taught at the University. The university lays emphasis on the practical orientation of the education, for which each and every student has to undergo the research works comprehensively as a compulsory part of the degree attainment. In this regard, the university has set up "Southern University Research Centre" for facilitating the research works.
