Prescribing medicines by generic names

Thursday, 8 May 2014

Drug manufacturers and their distributors thrive on unethical practices of doctors who prescribe medicine and help the sales of that particular drug. This was reported by Badrul Ahasn, in his article in "Trade & Market" pages in The Financial Express on May 03. The doctors make profit while the drug producers' sales climb up. Why this ethical malpractice is tolerated and allowed? Why does Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) turn a blind eye to this immoral practice? Strangely the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has not taken any step against this malpractice.
Why do not doctors prescribe the medicines by the generic names? They must stop prescribing drugs by their trade or brand names given by different manufacturers. The doctors are gifted air-tickets, hotel vouchers and other benefits, including cash money, by most of the drug producers in Bangladesh. This malpractice has been going on over decades in the country. License of the druggists should be provided with the list of particular drugs.
The doctors of Apollo Hospital in Dhaka prescribe medicines by generic names. Why do not other doctors practise this? The corrupt and illegal practice of prescribing drugs by trade names needs to be stopped.
