Present status of consumers' rights protection act discussed

The Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) and the Ministry of Industries, the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), in association with the Consumers' Association of Bangladesh (CAB), jointly organised a daylong workshop on 'Bangladesh Consumers Right Protection Law' at the BSTI Council Room in the city Monday.
The programme was organised as part of the ongoing three-year long BQSP (Bangladesh Quality Support Programme) activity for strengthening the legal framework in conformity with assessment and quality management systems of the country. The programme is funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the UNIDO.
Eminent scholars, lawyers, government officials and representatives from the ministries of commerce, law, justice and parliamentary affairs, home affairs, Planning Commission, and trade bodies including Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) attended the workshop to discuss the present status of the long-awaited Consumers Rights Protection Act to be enacted soon by the present interim government.
Barrister Tureen Afroz from the School of Law, BRAC University delivered the key-note speech on the central topic at the workshop, said a press release.
Justice Naimuddin Ahmed, former member of the Law Commission and first report and draft producer of the Consumers Protection Act was present as the chief guest on the occasion while the opening session was chaired by Md Azmal Hossain, director general of the BSTI and national project director of BQSP.
David Holbourne, chief technical adviser of BQSP, UNIDO was present as special guest.
President of CAB Borhan Ahmed chaired the technical session.
Among others, Economist Atiur Rahman, Ambassador Waliur Rahman, Prof Anwar Hossain, Prof AKM Harun Yusuf, Prof Mizanur Rahman, Prof Imamul Huq, Kh. Rashidul Hasan, national project coordinator (fisheries) from BQSP, M Liaquat Ali from Bangladesh Accreditation Board, Md Lutfur Rabby, director (metrology) of BSTI and Jenifa Jppa from UNDIP were present on the occasion.
Quazi Faruque, CAB secretary general, delivered the welcome address in the workshop and KM Mostafa Anwar, national project coordinator (QMS) of BQSP, UNIDO moderated the function.
