Preservation of Jatka Week-2011 begins today

Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdul Latif Biswas Sunday said Hilsha is playing a significant role in increasing the country's gross domestic product (GDP). The contribution of Hilsha to the country's GDP is now one per cent. He said Hilsha production in 2009-2010 fiscal was 0.31 million tonnes, and in first seven months of the current fiscal the production marked 0.28 million tonnes. The production is expected to exceed 0.34 million tonnes at the end of the current fiscal. The minister said export income from Hilsha in the current fiscal up to February had been Tk 2.80 billion where as in the last fiscal the total export income was Tk 1.25 billion. The minister said this as the chief guest at a press conference making the observance of "Jatka Preservation Week 2011" beginning from today (April 4).
