President assures EC of all-out cooperation in holding next polls

President Iajuddin Ahmed assured the Election Commission (EC) Tuesday of all-out cooperation in holding the general elections in 2008.
The President gave the assurance when Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) ATM Shamsul Huda called on him at Bangabhaban and apprised him of the EC activities, reports UNB.
The CEC also sought the President's cooperation in discharging the Commission's responsibility.
CEC Huda apprised the President that the EC's roadmap towards holding the general elections in 2008 is being implemented as per the schedule. Some steps have already been taken to make the election transparent and accountable, he added.
The President expressed satisfaction over the EC activities.
Among others, election commissioners Mohammad Sohul Hossain and M Sakhawat Hossain accompanied the CEC.
President's Defence Secretary Mohammad Aminul Karim, Secretary Mohammad Sirajul Islam and Press Secretary Abdul Awal Hawladar were present at the meeting.
Another report adds: President Iajuddin Ahmed said that the next Jatiya Sangsad (JS) elections would be held within the timeframe set by the Election Commission (EC).
"The Election Commission has taken various measures, including prseparing voters' list with photographs, in this connection," the President said while outgoing Ambassador of the Netherlands in Bangladesh Kees Beemsterboer made a farewell call on him at Bangabhaban Tuesday.
Welcoming the envoy, the President appreciated his sincere efforts in strengthening relations between the two countries during his three-year tenure in Bangladesh and expressed the hope that the ties would be deepened further in the days ahead.
He underscored the need for enhancing trade and commerce for the mutual benefit of the two countries and called upon Dutch investors to invest in Bangladesh as a very congenial atmosphere of investment is prevailing here.
He also stressed exchanging educational programmes between the two countries.
The President conveyed his deep sense of gratitude to Queen of the Netherlands Beatrix for expressing her sympathetic feelings for the flood-affected people of Bangladesh.
The envoy expressed his deep gratitude to the government and the people of Bangladesh for providing support and cooperation in discharging his duties as the Dutch ambassador in Bangladesh.
