President calls for building IT-oriented knowledge based society

President Zillur Rahman Monday called upon all to build an IT-oriented knowledge based society to face the global challenges, reports BSS.

"We need to go forward by adopting various programmes to build a prosperous Bangladesh step by step," the President made the appeal while speaking at the 9th convocation of American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) at Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in the city Monday.

The President said the Prime Minister had declared 'change of charter' to make the county free from illiteracy by 2014 and build a 'digital Bangladesh' by 2021.

"I call upon country's planners, implementing agencies, teachers and civil society to perform their duties sincerely from their respective fields to achieve the goals," he added.

Referring to the dream of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to turn the country into 'Sonar Bangla', the President said the dream was yet to a fulfilled.

Congratulating the new graduates, the President, who is also the chancellor of the university, said the nation expected that the graduates would contribute immensely to building a self-reliant prosperous country.

He believed that the new graduates would be able to uphold the country's image by using their talent and excellence.

The President also paid his tributes to the army officers who were brutally killed during the recent carnage at Bangladesh Rifle (BDR) headquarters at Pilkhana here.

He said the deaths of such kind of talented army officers were an irreparable loss to the nation.

Turkish Ambassador to Bangladesh Sakir Ozkan Torunlar gave the convocation speech. Vice-chancellor of the university Dr Carmen Z Lamagna and chairman of AIUB Trustee Board Dr Anawarul Abedin also spoke on the occasion.

A total of 858 students were conferred graduate and post graduate degrees in different disciplines. Among them, three brilliant students were awarded Chancellor's Gold Medal.
