President Zillur Rahman Thursday called upon all to build a social movement in combating terrorism in the country, reports BSS.
"Terrorism has become a global problem and we are also not free from its adverse effects. We have to be aware so that the country's image would not be tarnished because of terrorism," he said.
The President was addressing a gathering of nearly 200 high level police officials at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban on the occasion of Police Week.
Congratulating the police officials, President asked them to be vigilant in ensuring human rights as well as to be respectful to the democratic culture.
He said the members of police must perform their duties with sincerity, highest professionalism and neutrality so that no one could raise any question about their honesty.
Zillur Rahman said the behaviour of the members of police should be friendly to people so that they can seek their help spontaneously and without any fear.
"I think the law and order situation of the country will be immensely improved, if the common people keep confidence in police as their friends," he said.
The President expressed the hope that all the members of police would perform their due responsibilities with discipline, honesty, sincerity and patriotism abiding by the law.
The President also said the criminal activities have been increasing with the growth of population. "Change has been seen in the trends of criminal motives, various kinds of new offences like cyber crimes are being committed," he said.
For that reason, effective steps need to be taken to train all members of police in modern information technology to curb such multi-faceted crimes, he added. Terming the women and child trafficking as a heinous crime, the President said the local and international criminal groups, responsible for the crime must be uprooted.
