President commutes punishments of 33 convicts since 2001

The President has so far granted mercy or commuted the sentences of 33 convicts in criminal cases since 2001, State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan told Parliament. The minister came up with the data on Wednesday while responding to a starred question from Pir Fazlur Rahman (Sunamganj-4) in the House. Of the 33, 23 condemned convicts got presidential clemency while another seven got their death sentences commuted, according to a list attached with the minister’s answer. Besides, one of the 33 convicts who had been sentenced to life term imprisonment got the presidential clemency while the punishments of two lifers commuted to 10 years from 30. The President condoned and commuted the punishments of the convicts following the mercy petitions or applications filed by them, the junior minister told the House, according to a news agency.
