President for change of attitude towards women\\\'s work
Thursday, 6 March 2014
President Abdul Hamid Wednesday underscored the need for change of attitude towards the works of women and their contributions with a view to preventing discrimination and violence against women, reports UNB.
"Time has now come to change attitude towards the works of women work and their contributions… without change of attitude, it is not possible to prevent discrimination and violence against women," he said.
The President made the remarks while addressing a function marking the launch of a campaign, 'Equality through Dignity', jointly organised by Manusher Jonno Foundation, Women and Children Affairs Ministry and associate organisations at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city.
Abdul Hamid observed that women are being deprived from the recognition and dignity of their work due to the traditional patriarchal attitude.
He said: "The rural women of the country have been carrying out their household works from morning to midnight. But their contribution is silently being drowned. Time has come to recognise and respect their work by identifying their unseen contributions."
The President hoped that through the campaign -- Equality through Dignity -- the economic value of women's works will be identified apart from giving recognition of their economical tasks in family, society and state.
"It will help to add new dimension to change attitude towards women as well as maintaining dignity of women," he said.
Mentioning that the women have been contributing in changing the society from the beginning, he said: "In Bangladesh, there are many examples of women's success in all spheres. We've successful women entrepreneurs, women organisers and wise politicians."
President Abdul Hamid mentioned that at present, the Prime Minister, Speaker, Opposition Leader, Deputy Leader in Parliament, and many cabinet members are women. "They are taking the country forward with their farsightedness, wisdom and patriotism," he said.
Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor, State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki and Manusher Jonno Foundation executive director Shaheen Anam, among others, spoke at programme. Manusher Jonno Foundation governing board member Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud presided.
Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam, Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) executive director Dr Iftekharuzzaman and Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) president Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul expressed solidarity with the campaign.
