President M Zillur Rahman Thursday expressed the hope that the rights organisations working in the country would play a vital role in creating awareness among the people about human rights, reports BSS.
In a message on the eve of the United Nations Human Rights Day, the President said the people of this country fall victims to repression and harassment as they are not aware of their rights.
The President said the present government is very sincere to uphold human rights as the Bangladesh constitution guarantees it.
In a message on the eve of the United Nations Human Rights Day, Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina reiterated Bangladesh's firm commitment to stand by the United Nations and the international community in the efforts towards ensuring universal human rights.
She said Bangladesh joins the international community in reiterating its unequivocal support in upholding the rights as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Bangladesh, in line with its constitutional commitment, has always been supportive of the role of the United Nations in protecting and promoting human rights globally, the PM said.
Sheikh Hasina said her government has been consistently striving to ensure rights of specific vulnerable groups, including rights of women, rights of children, rights of minorities and rights of the people with disability.
"As a current member of the UN Human Rights Council, we continue to fully support and cooperate with the Human Rights mechanism of the United Nations," the Prime Minister said.
She recalled that 62 years ago in 1948, the UN adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in order to promote and protect respect for human rights and fundamental freedom for all.
