President for creating social movement on eye donation

President M Zillur Rahman laid emphasis on creating a social movement for posthumous eye donation to reduce the numbers of permanently blind people in the country, reports BSS.
"We would have to make general people understand that there is no religious barrier to posthumous eye donation," the President said while inaugurating the programmes of 'National Voluntary Blood Donation and Posthumous Eye Donation Day 2010' at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city Tuesday.
Health and Family Welfare Ministry, Sandhani Eye Donation Society and Shandhani Central Council jointly organised the progmramme to mark the day.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr AFM Ruhal Huq and Adviser to the Prime Minister Dr Syed Modasser Ali spoke as special guests while Health and Family Welfare Secretary M Humayun Kabir was in the chair. Secretary General of Sandhani National Eye Donation Society Dr Habibe Millat gave the welcome speech.
President M Zillur Rahman said it should not a problem in collecting blood for any surgery patients or injured persons in a populated country like Bangladesh.
Huge campaign and proper counselling about voluntary blood donation need to be carried out to encourage youths to step forward for fulfilling demand of blood, he said.
President Zillur Rahman lauded the role of Sandhani for welfare of common people through collecting voluntarily donated blood as well as donated eyes posthumously.
Dr AFM Ruhal Huq urged the private organisations to come forward with posthumous eye donation activities alike what they had been doing in blood donation programme.
He said the first ever modern eye bank would be set up at the new building of Sandhani.
Dr Millat said so far Sandhani collected 0.75 million (7.5 lakh) bags of donated blood and 3500 posthumous cornea.
He said Sandhani and other blood collecting organisations have been able to gather 0.2 million bags of blood against the demand of 0.4 million every year.
"If every citizen of the country between ages 18 and 57 donated blood just once in every five years then we can collect four million bags of blood which is 10 times more than the demand," he said.
Later, the President laid foundation stone of the new building of Sandhani to be built at Nilkhet of the capital.
