President for extending all-out cooperation to disabled

President Iajuddin Ahmed said Thursday the present caretaker government is working relentlessly for holding of a free, fair and neutral election ensuring participation of all, reports UNB.

He made a call for the government and the Election Commission (EC) to extend all-out cooperation to the disabled persons in franchising their voting right smoothly through different initiatives, including setting up of poling centres fit for them.

"I hope that the disabled voters along with general voters will take part in different activities of electioneering side by side with casting their votes in a festive mood," he said.

He made the call while addressing the inaugural session of the 4th national convention on democratic rights of disabled persons held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre at Sher-e-Bangla Nogor in the city.

Action on Disability and Development (ADD) organised the convention in partnership with national, district and grassroots-level non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working for the physically challenged persons.

Women and Children and Cultural Affairs Adviser Rasheda K Chowdhury and former adviser of caretaker government Rokeya Afzal Rahman spoke as special guests, while Country Director of ADD Mosharraf Hossain and President of Trinomul Protibondhi Songstha (TPS) Aktar Hossain also spoke on the occasion.

The President believes that the persons with disabilities could be made financially independent ensuring their jobs. They could put important contribution to the decision-making process as well, he added..

"The overall development of the country cannot be achieved at the aspired level if the persons with disabilities are not involved in the mainstream of national development, as they are an inseparable part of the country's population," he told the function.

Referring to various steps undertaken by the government to ensure overall development of the disabled persons, including providing education, healthcare and jobs for them, the President said the government has been sincerely working for their welfare.

In this regard, the President also called upon the conscious and well-off people of society to come forward with the spirit of humanity for the welfare of disabled persons, alongside the government.
