President for making harsh laws against traffic rule violators

President Zillur Rahman Sunday laid emphasis on amending the existing laws against violation of traffic rules, so that those responsible for road mishaps cannot escape punishment due to weak provisions of the laws, reports BSS.
"Killers must be tried under stringent laws to reduce road accidents," he said while addressing a seminar titled " Effective Prevention of Road Accidents Needed' at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of Dhaka University (DU) here.
Dhaka University Alumni Association (DUAA), Saif Foundation and Families United Against Road Accidents (FUARA) jointly organised the seminar.
Communication Minister Syed Abul Hossain, Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, Chairman of National Human Rights Commission Professor Dr Mizanur Rahman, Advocate Tarana Halim, MP, DUAA President Syed Monjur Elahi and Secretary General Raqib Uddin Ahmed, Convener of FUARA Ekram Ahmed and Chairperson of Saif Foundation Samia Halim also spoke on the occasion.
Zillur Rahman said travel insurance should be introduced for all passengers so that they get compensations from the concerned transport authorities after the accident.
The provision of paying compensation to the deceased , treatment cost to injured as well as lifetime grants to those who become disabled due to accidents have to be ensured, the President said.
President Zillur Rahman also stressed proper implementation of the traffic laws for reducing road mishaps that claim valuable lives everyday.
"All concerned engaged in road transports including vehicle owners, drivers, passengers, law enforcing agencies, BRTA and roads and highways department will have to follow traffic and motor vehicle laws," he said.
The president said public opinion against road mishap has been created but numbers of road accidents are not decreasing rather it is increasing.
