According to Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the total population of the country now stands around 150 million with 1.39 per cent growth rate, which was 146.6 million until July 2009.
Meanwhile, President M Zillur Rahman laid emphasis on reaching contraceptive devices to every capable couple of the country giving more importance to the poor, illiterate and unaware factions of the populace to reduce the population growth rate.
"I urge all to step forward with an integrated plan for further pacing up the ongoing social movement, created under the present family planning programme," he said while inaugurating the national programme on the World Population Day-2010 at Osmani Memorial Auditorium.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr AFM Ruhal Haque, Adviser to the Prime Minister Syed Modasser Ali, State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Mozibur Ragman Fakir and UNFPA country representative Arthur Erken also spoke on the occasion.
Health Secretary Sheikh Altaf Ali presided over the function while director general of Family Planning Department M Abdul Quiyum gave the welcome speech.
President M Zillur Rahman said there is no other alternative to control the population for building a balanced environment keeping away from the ill-cycle of poverty.
