President for vesting army leadership in talented, patriotic officers sans political ambition

President Iajuddin Ahmed recommended vesting army leadership in competent, talented, conscious and patriotic officers clean-cut from political ambition for maintaining a strong professional military force.
He said such army leadership should be "accountable to the country and nation, and above all, free from political ambition".
"The leadership of the army has to be entrusted to those who are skilled, conscious, talented, imbued with patriotism and accountable to the country and nation," said the President, also supreme commander of the armed forces, at Army Headquarters Selection Board-2007 meet in the city Sunday, reports UNB.
Among others, Chief of Army Staff Moeen U Ahmed, Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division Masud Uddin Chowdhury, Quarter Master General M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Military Secretary to the President M Aminul Karim, Defence Secretary Kamrul Hasan and Director General of DGFI Golam Mohammad were present.
The President noted patriotic army formed through the great War of Liberation has always played bold roles during country's crises times and expressed the hope that they would "always stand beside government so democracy can flourish in the country".
He is very much hopeful about the selected army representatives who should be responsible to the subordinates, respectful to the seniors, self-controlled and religious but free from the influence of fanaticism.
"We need a professional army, for which professionalism is of pivotal need. Because, there is no alternative to professionalism to achieve efficiency," President Iajuddin Ahmed observed.
Terming the army symbol of country's independence and sovereignty, and also the pride of the nation, he said the role of the army in national development, extending assistance in maintaining internal discipline and serving the distressed people has been given an institutional shape.
"Presently, the active and lead role of the army in the ongoing countrywide drive against corruption and crime made it (the drive) a success and praiseworthy worldwide," the President told the army hierarchy.
He said the involvement of the army in preparing voters' list and the national identity (ID) card project has consoled the people a lot. "The project will be a milestone in the country's democratic and administrative history, if implemented."
Iajuddin Ahmed also said the present government is doing modernisation and expansion works to build a strong army to face the challenges of the 21st century.
