President Md Abdul Hamid urged Saturday welfare-oriented organisations to come forward to supplement the government efforts to turn Bangladesh into a middle-income country by 2021, reports UNB.
"The government has adopted the plan to turn our beloved motherland into a middle-income nation by 2021. I urge other welfare organisations to come forward like Lions Clubs to supplement the government's effort. I hope, we'll be able to build Bangabandhu's Golden Bengal if all work together for changing the lot of the common people," the President said while addressing the inaugural session of the 27th annual multiple district convention of Lions Clubs International at a city hotel Saturday.
Council chairperson of the district Dr SM Zaglul A Mojumder, FBCCI President Qazi Akram Uddin Ahmed, past international directors Sheikh Kabir Hossain and Moslem Ali Khan and convention chairman Altaf Hossain Biswas also spoke on the occasion.
Mentioning that the role of various institutions as well as social organisations are very important apart from the government for the overall development of the nation, Abdul Hamid said: " It'll be possible to take the country to an expected level of development by discharging duties bestowed upon all properly."
He went on to say, "You have both the scope and ability to work in the fields like education, health, environment, sanitation and reproductive health. If you involve yourselves in these welfare activities as the solvent people of society, the overall development and progress of the country will be expedited apart from ensuring quality."
Observing that the country is advancing towards prosperity, the President said the per capita income has marked a rise, the rate of education increased, the standard of living improved apart from visible progress in electricity generation, communications, agriculture and urbanisation, Hamid added.
"However, I have to admit we're still far behind from our desired development. I hope, we'll be able to build Bangabandhu's Sonar Bangla (Golden Bengal) soon, if we work together," the President said.
