The caretaker government (CG) has decided to allow free politics under relaxed rules with the start of election process in the country in a turnaround after a lapse of two years, report UNB and bdnews24.com.
A gazette notification on relaxation of the Emergency Powers Rules (EPR) was published Monday afternoon.
Home Adviser Maj Gen (Retd) MA Matin said the relaxation of the EPR, promulgated after the January 11, 2007 changeover following the October 2006 street mayhem over electoral issues, would not cause deterioration of the law and-order situation again.
"No, the law-and-order situation won't deteriorate," he told reporters at his Ministry, a day after the schedule for December 18 general election was declared following the removal of legal barriers.
Meanwhile, troops are being withdrawn from field level, with President Iajuddin Ahmed approving a proposal Monday noon. An official at the Bangabhaban, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed it. Earlier in the Secretariat, Matin told reporters about the withdrawal.
Military rolled into the streets on Jan 19, 2007 to assist civil administration after the emergency was declared on Jan 11.
The government also revoked clauses 5 and 6 of Emergency Powers Rules 2007, removing media restrictions and barriers to campaign rallies and processions, an announcement said Monday
Parliamentary and Upazila candidates will now be able to assemble supporters and organise rallies in accordance with the Representation of the People Order 1972 and the 2008 Upazila law, a home ministry circular said.
