President seeks cooperation from all in holding fair polls

CHITTAGONG, Nov 5 (UNB): President Prof Iajuddin Ahmed Wednesday sought all-out cooperation from all concerned in making the upcoming general election free, fair and credible.
"The whole nation is marching towards the general election as, in the meantime, the Election Commission (EC) has announced the election schedules," he told his audience at the third convocation of Chittagong University (CU), 22 kilometres off the port city.
To this end, the present caretaker government (CG) is working relentlessly, the President added.
Chaired by the President, also the chancellor of the university, the function was also addressed, among others, by Education Adviser Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman and CU Vice-chancellor Prof M Bodiul Alam. Professor Emeritus of the University Dr Jamal Nazrul Islam delivered the convocation speech.
President Iajuddin reminded that the university had a great role to play in fulfilling hopes and aspirations of the nation.
As the university held the nation's values, it needed state-of-the-art curricula, time-befitting subjects and researches for meeting the needs of the nation, he noted.
Terming university a place of creating knowledge and innovative ideas, President Iajuddin, a former Dhaka University teacher, said it was the moral responsibility of all to uphold the congenial atmosphere on the campus at any cost.
He said since its inception in 1966, with the aim of expansion of higher education in the eastern part of the country, CU had produced a good number of brilliant and talented personalities who were contributing to international and national arenas.
The President expressed the hope that the university would be elevated onto a higher plane in the future as he saw a favourable atmosphere of education and research in the university in the vicinity of hills verdant forests.
He told the teachers that they had the responsibility to show the right path to the people when society and the nation were being misled.
"You have to uphold this great pride in national interest," he said, as the country is passing through a transitional period.
A total of 860 students were conferred upon Bachelor of Honours and Master's degrees, M Phil and Ph D at the convocation.
The President congratulated the fresh graduates and urged them to serve the people and the nation as sons of the soil, full of potential.
