President urges DU alumni to uphold varsity image

President M Zillur Rahman Monday urged the alumni of Dhaka University (DU) to play a vital role in upholding the image of the country's oldest university, reports BSS.
"Role of alumni association is indispensable in ensuring basic improvement as well as building infrastructure of the university," he said while a delegation of the executive committee members of the DU Alumni Association led by its president Syed Monjur Elahi called on him at Bangabhaban in the city Monday.
The delegation also included Secretary General of the executive committee Raquibuddin Ahmed. During the meeting, President Zillur Rahman observed that active representation of the alumni association in various policy making forums of DU would help bring more dynamism to the university's activities.
The President said DU alumni are contributing to the various sectors like administration, politics, legal affairs, trade and commerce, medical services, education, banking and mass media.
"So I think active representation of DU Alumni Association in various policy making forums of the university would undoubtedly bring more dynamism to the ongoing activities of the university," the President observed.
Zillur Rahman said the DU alumni have been continuously playing leading role in various sectors for 90 years after establishment of the university with their talents, thoughts and sincerity.
"It's my hope that this tradition will continue in the future days," he said.
Syed Monjur Elahi said alumni associations in the developed countries particularly in the USA play significant role in improving the quality of education.
He apprised the President of the fact that a total of 500 scholarships are awarded from the Dhaka University Alumni Association every year by a selection committee under the Vice-Chancellor of the University.
Secretaries of the President's Office were present during the meeting.
