President urges teachers to create efficient engineers, science-minded human resources

RAJSHAHI, Mar 18 (UNB): President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed Tuesday called for attaching top priority to creating efficient engineers and science-minded human resources to catch up with the fast-moving world in the 21st century.
"The importance of learning science and technology has increased in this age of free flow of information and globalisation," he said addressing the 3rd convocation of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) on the university campus.
He noted that there is no alternative to learning science and technology to transform country's huge human resources into efficient manpower.
"The more a country becomes rich in science and technology, the more it is advanced and prosperous," the President told his audience of engineering teachers and students and the elite of Rajshahi, known as city of education.
He regretted that despite having huge human resources, the nation couldn't reach its aspired goal for lack of excellence in science and technology.
"And we are now falling back from the fast-moving world economy," he reminded in this context of lack of advances in the fields of science and technology.
Terming teachers as the architects of nation building, he also called upon them to keep themselves engaged in research works besides keeping themselves updated on the latest knowledge in relevant subjects and impart those to the their students.
Vice-chancellor of RUET Professor Dr AFM Anwarul Haque also spoke on the occasion. Former VC of BUET Professor Dr Mosharaf Hosain Khan was the convocation speaker.
President Dr Ahmed, also a former university teacher, observed that the importance of country's universities in expanding science-and technology-based education as limitless.
"We have a glorious past as the country gave birth to many renowned engineers, scientists, artists, litterateurs and cultural personalities, priests, who earned name and fame in the world through their works, as well as they brightened the image of the country across the globe.
"We have to go ahead following the path of these celebrated personalities."
The President said the universities were the meadows of higher education that stimulated quest for truth and unveiled fields of fostering freethinking alongside imparting education.
Beyond imparting education based on textbooks, different sorts of extracurricular activities are run through the year at the universities in all the countries of the world, so that students, researchers and teachers could be able to learn practically.
Referring to different steps taken by the government, including provision for the highest allocation to education in the national budget and effort for expanding women education, the President said the government has attached top priority to education with the goal of building a knowledge society.
"As you know, the issue of ensuring quality education and keeping healthy environment at every educational institution are very important to build a knowledge-based society, which is achieved through united efforts of students, teachers and guardians," he told the assembly.
Responding to the demand for allocating increased funds for research, he drew attention of all concerned, including education ministry, to this matter.
Dr Ahmed thanked the students, teachers and authority of the university as it held good position according to the OIC statistics in the field of research and publication.
He urged the passing-out students to use their knowledge they earned from the academic life at the university for the welfare of the country and the people, reflecting truth and justice in their every work and sprit.
