BNP's Dhaka city unit will hold its rally after its scheduled demonstration programme in front of the Jatiya Press Club today (Monday) if it is not allowed to stage it at Suhrawardy Udyan, reports UNB.
"We've sought permission from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) for holding the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on Monday," BNP Dhaka city unit member secretary Abdus Salam told the news agency Sunday.
He further said they also asked for permission for staging the rally in front the Jatiya Press Club as an alternative venue if they are not given Suhrawardy Udyan for it.
The BNP leader, however, said they want to stage it at Suhrawardy Udyan.
Earlier Saturday, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a press briefing announced countrywide demonstrations to register its protest against the 'repressive acts' of the government.
Fakhrul told reporters that their demonstrations are meant for registering protest against the "government's growing repressive acts like killing of opposition leaders and activists, their forced disappearances, filing of false cases against them" and indictment of Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman.
The demonstrations will also be held in all upazilas, district towns and divisional cities.
Another report adds: BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir cancelled a scheduled meeting with the leaders of the party's affiliate Oikya Parishad, reports bdnews24.com.
The meeting was scheduled to be held at the BNP chief's Gulshan office Sunday morning.
Fakhrul asked for a 10-member delegation but the Oikya Parishad leaders could not decide immediately about its composition.
"We came to meet the (acting) secretary general. He wanted to hold the meeting with 10 people among us which we could not decide immediately. That's why he left," said Oikya Parishad convener Mohammad Hanif.
Hanif said the BNP leader assured them of holding the meeting at a convenient time.
