Press fully free, no regulation imposed under emergency: CA

Wednesday, 3 December 2008

Chief Adviser (CA) Fakhruddin Ahmed Tuesday said the press in Bangladesh was totally free as no restrictive regulation was imposed on the media under the present state of emergency, prompted by problems centring elections in January last year, reports UNB.
He said since the day-one of assumption of office as CA on January 12, 2007, he had asked the authorities concerned that "there should be no restrictions on the press". And restrictions under the emergency power rules on the press were lifted thereafter.
The head of the CG made the observations when a delegation of the International Press Institute (IPI) led by IPI director David Dadge made a courtesy call on him at his office. The state of press freedom in Bangladesh was discussed during the meeting.
IPI, the global network of editors, media executives and leading journalists, is dedicated to furtherance and safeguarding of press freedom, promotion of free flow of information and improving practices of journalism. Established in 1950, it has now over 120 countries as members.
