NILPHAMARI, Oct 28: Due to unprecedented price hike of gold and silvers, goldsmiths in the district are passing hard time, according to sources.
There are about 400 goldsmiths across the district and about 1,000 workers are engaged in the industry.
One of the goldsmiths at the city's New Market told the FE that price of 10 gram gold in the open market was Tk 15,437 and the price of 10 gram silver was Tk 400. The prices are much higher than that of previous year, he added.
According to the sources, if the situation prevails many goldsmiths of the district may quit their business which will ultimately make thousands of workers unemployed.
Goldsmiths have urged the authorities concerned to take immediate steps to save their age old profession. If they get government help they would be able to contribute to the national economy, they added.
