RANGPUR, June 11: The prices of various construction materials have been increasing in Rangpur for the last couple of months, hampering house building and other development works in the district, sources said.
According to the sources, two months ago 10-ms iron rod was available at Tk 37,000 per tonne, and 12-ms iron rod was sold at Tk 36,000 per tonne. But currently 10-ms iron rod is being sold at Tk 41,000 per tonne, and 12-ms is sold at Tk 40,000 per tonne.
The prices of different qualities of cement have also registered abnormal rise by Tk 40 to Tk 50 per bag. A bag of cement was earlier sold between Tk 230-270 depending on the brand. At present, it is being sold at Tk 350-370 per bag.
Local traders said, due to inadequate supply of iron rods and cement from Dhaka and Chittagong, the prices of these goods had increased abnormally.
A number of construction firm owners said, they have been compelled to suspend most of the construction works due to exorbitant prices of iron road and cement.
Meanwhile, following closure of the ongoing construction works, undertaken by the government, semi-government and non-government organisations, hundreds of construction workers and day-labourers have become jobless. As a result, most of them have been passing their days in semi-starvation, said a local mason.
Immediate steps are needed to ensure adequate supply of the construction materials at normal prices to resume the construction works, and save the people connected with the sector, the sources added.
