BRAHMANBARIA, Nov 1: Hike in prices of raw materials has seriously affected the cottage industry producing handicraft products in the district.
In the situation, production of handicraft items has declined drastically this year and the local artisans have failed to meet the demand of the market for their products.
Besides, due to lack of working capital, proper government patronisation and necessary marketing facilities, the artisans find it difficult to continue their profession and are switching over to other professions.
Talking to the FE, some artisans of Halderpara at Brahmanbaria town said that earlier their profession was a lucrative one. But now the local artisans are passing their days in abject poverty.
Earlier, they produced handicrafts product like handkerchief, blouse, sari, punjabi, bed-sheet, mat, doormat, wall-mat, screen, cradle, hand-fan, carpet, pillow, etc.
These items had a great demand in the market and the earning was satisfactory. But gone are the good old days. The artisans are now running their business in great hardship.
In the circumstances, the local artisans have sought necessary government steps to save the cottage industry from extinction.
