Price of garlic all-time low in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, Nov 04: Price of garlic has come down to all time low in Nilphamari district. At present one maund (40 kg) of garlic is being sold at Tk 500 in the wholesale market whereas during the harvesting season it's per maund price was Tk 800 to Tk 900. DAE sources said the production of garlic in Nilphamari in 2007-08 was 3905 metric tonnes produced in 490 hectares of land. Market sources said still there remains huge stock of garlic in the houses of the growers and also with the stockists of the commodity.
Growers sources said per maund cost of production of garlic is nearly Tk 800 as a result growers have lost the incentive to cultivate it in the coming year.
