Price of green mangoes high in city mkts despite good supply

Saturday, 18 April 2009

The price of green mangoes is still high in the city markets amid growing demands, although mango production is reported to be good across the country, reports UNB.
The production of mangoes is higher this year than the previous years across the country and the mango growers are happy with the price in the markets.
City traders said they have been receiving supplies of green mangoes this season mostly from Gazipur, Mymensingh, Narsingdi and Satkhira to meet the consumers' demand.
"The price of green mangoes is higher today (Friday) than it was two days ago. I bought 5 kilograms of them paying Tk 90 in the wholesale market just two days before, but today 5 kgs of green mangoes were sold at Tk 150," Nizam, a city mango hawker, told the correspondent.
Nizam, who hails from Mymensingh district, said although the production of green mangoes is quite high this season, their prices are not going down because of rising demand in the capital and also across the country.
The wholesale mango traders at Karwan Bazar informed that the market of green mango is better this time than the previous years and the growers would make more profit by selling the green mangoes than the ripe ones.
"Green mangoes can be preserved and supplied easily. Besides, the price of green mango will almost equal the ripe mango when it will come in the market," said Rashid, a middle-aged wholesaler at Karwan Bazar.
Green mangoes are being sold at Tk 25-30 per kilogram in the wholesale market and Tk 35-40 at the retail level.
"There seems a little chance for the price to go down unless storms damage the green mangoes," said another trader at Karwan Bazar.
This correspondent himself saw that trees -- both on the roadside and at mango orchards in Kishoreganj, Narsingdi, Narayanganj and Gazipur districts are heavily laden with bunches of mangoes.
