Friday, 28 December 2007

RANGPUR, Dec 27 (BSS): The middle and lower income group people have been affected seriously following repeated price hike of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the country's northern region.
Consumers and market sources said prices of LPG cylinder of various brands marked sharp rises in phases during the last four months causing untold sufferings to the consumers.
The retailers and wholesalers of LPG cylinders said price of LPG has increased abnormally in the international market and its production by Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) is not sufficient to meet local demands.
Besides, they are not getting adequate supply of LPG cylinders produced by the Bangladesh Oxygen Limited (BOL) and some of the wholesalers stopped lifting cylinders from Clean Heat, Basundhara and some other brands for high prices.
As a result, supply of LPG cylinders has declined in many places of the northern region causing abnormal price rise and sufferings to the middle class and the lower and fixed income group consumers, sources said.
The consumers blamed a section of greedy traders for raising the LPG prices artificially. They sought urgent intervention of the concerned authorities to bring down the LPG prices to tolerable levels.
According to the market sources, price of LPG cylinders has risen by Tk 400 to Tk 500 per unit in recent months in the northern region of the country.
The price of each of the cylinders of the Clean Heat and Basundhara brand is varying from Tk 1,280 to Tk 1,350 with some variations at places while each of the Jamuna brand cylinders is being sold at Tk 1,130 to Tk 1,150 and TotalGaz at Tk 1,120 to Tk 1,140, which are beyond the reach of the common consumers.
