Prices of chicken, eggs, garlic witness fresh hike

Prices of broiler chicken, eggs and garlic witnessed a fresh hike while that of other essentials including edible oil, rice and sugar remained more or less stable in the city's kitchen markets, traders said.
Prices of poultry birds increased by Tk 5-10 per kg to Tk 130-135 per kg. A unit of four pieces of egg was sold at Tk 28-29 which was Tk 26-28 in previous week.
The government is yet to reset the edible oil prices as traders are selling soybean oil at prices higher than the rate fixed earlier.
Ministry of Commerce instructed the millers on January 05 to ensure the smooth supply of edible oil in the local market along with the increasing trend of dollar price hike. Tariff commission will again sit with the refiners and millers tomorrow (Sunday) to find out a strategy to rein in the edible oil prices further.
According to Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) a litre of loose soybean oil was sold at Tk 122-128 per litre.
But market survey in different kitchen markets revealed that loose soybean was sold between Tk 132-136 per litre.
Prices of one litre bottled soybean of different brands ranged from Tk 125 to Tk128, two litre bottle at Tk 248-252 and five litre containers between Tk 605 and Tk 625.
Sugar prices ranged between Tk 56 and Tk 60 per kg.
Prices of ginger remained stable while that of onion decreased. Local variety of onion was selling at Tk 15-20 per kg down from Tk 20-22 and the Indian variety at Tk 14-20 per kg down from Tk 15-20 in the previous week.
But garlic prices increased by Tk 5 to 10 per kg. Local garlic ranged between Tk 40-55 per kg which was Tk 35-45per kg and imported one at Tk 50-60 per kg against Tk 40-50 per kg.
Prices of rice remained stable during the last week. Minicate was selling at Tk 38-44, Nazirshail at Tk 45-52, BR 28 at Tk 34-36, Paizam at Tk 34-36 and IRRI at Tk 28-30 per kg.
Loose Atta was selling between Tk 28 and Tk 30 per kg while prices of two-kg packages ranged from Tk 65 to Tk 66. Flour (Maida) maintained the earlier high trend and loose variety was sold at Tk 38-42 per kg and packed variety at Tk 92 for a two kg packet.
Traders said supply increase helped stabilise prices of vegetables. But consumers told the FE the prices of vegetables are still high, even after the arrival of winter varieties.
Brinjal prices ranged from Tk 20 to Tk 30 per kg, carrot at Tk 20-25 per kg, cucumber at Tk 20-25, tomato between Tk 40 and Tk 50, bean at Tk 20-30, green papaya between Tk 15 and Tk 18 and potato at Tk 12-14.
A medium size cabbage was selling at Tk 10-15 and cauliflower at Tk 15.
Prices of fish also maintained the earlier high trend. A pair of medium size hilsa was selling at Tk 1400-1600, ruhi at Tk 180-220, shrimp at Tk 350-450 according to the size, pabda at Tk 700 kg, pangas at Tk 100-120 per kg.
