Prices of daily essentials except edible oil decline in city markets

Prices of daily essentials including rice, garlic, ginger and sugar witnessed a downward trend while that of edible oil maintained the high trend in the city's kitchen markets, traders said Friday. Prices of rice especially the coarse varieties marked a decline by Tk 1-1.50 per kg due to lack of demand as the government started expanded programmes to sell the staple food at subsidised prices, rice traders said. They said the prices might decline further if the government continues its intervention in the market through open market sale, ration and fair price cards. Coarse rice popularly known as IRRI was selling at Tk 34-Tk 36 a kilogramme at retail level, down from Tk 35-Tk 37 a week ago. Prices of Minicate also declined but traders said the low-price variety is not the original one and other medium-variety rice was mixed with it. Minicate was selling at Tk 50-52 per kg and Nazirshail at Tk 48-55, Paizam at Tk 40-42, Lata at Tk 42-44 and BR 28 at Tk 45-48 per kg last week. A kg of loose soybean oil sold at Tk 116 to Tk 118 and palm oil at Tk 100-104 last week. A one-litre container sold at Tk 116 and a two-litre container at Tk 228 last week. A can containing five litres of brand soybean oil such as Rupchanda, Teer and Pusti sold between Tk 570 and Tk 580. Sugar was selling at Tk 60 per kg, down from Tk 62 per kg earlier at the retailers' level in the city. Both loose and packed Atta and Maida maintained the same trend last week in the city's kitchen markets. Unpacked flour (Atta) was selling at Tk 32-33 per kg and the packed variety at Tk 36 per kg. Unpacked refined flour (Maida) was selling at Tk 36-37 per kg and packed Maida at Tk 41 per kg last week. The price of per kilogramme local onion moved down to Tk 20-22 from Tk 23-24 per kg earlier. Prices of garlic and ginger also witnessed the downward trend. The imported garlic was selling at Tk 140 per kg, which was Tk 160 per kg earlier and the local one at Tk 80-90 per kg against Tk 130 per kg in the week before. Ginger ranged between Tk 70 and Tk 80 per kg, which was Tk 90-100 per kg earlier. The price of four pieces of farm eggs was Tk 22-23, down from Tk 24-25 in the week before. Local lentil was selling between Tk 80 and Tk 110 per kg depending on quality. Dry chili was selling at Tk 170-200 per kg and turmeric ranged between Tk 280 and Tk 300 per kg. Prices of most of the vegetables and fish remained steady in the city's kitchen markets. Potato was selling at Tk 10 per kg, brinjal at Tk 25-35 per kg, tomato at Tk 40-50 per kg, bean at Tk 30-35 per kg, patal at Tk 20-25, green chili at Tk 40 per kg, cucumber at Tk 30-35 per kg, green papya at Tk 14-16 per kg and a medium-sized cauliflower at Tk 25 and a cabbage at Tk 20. A pair of medium-sized hilsha was selling at Tk 700-800, shrimp at Tk 280-450 per kg, 'ruhi' at Tk 230-250 per kg and 'pangas' at Tk 80-90 per kg.
