Prices of edible items rise further with advent of Ramadan

Prices of onion, green chilli, lemon, lentil, edible oil and vegetables increased and the prices of other essential commodities remained unchanged in the city markets over the past week.
Traders said prices of most of the items have gone up in the local markets due to higher demand and panic-buying ahead of the Ramadan. Moreover, most of such items were damaged in the recent countrywide flood.
As a result, prices of such essential commodities increased in the city markets over the past week, traders said.
Consumers started buying onion in bulk amount ahead of the Ramadan to store the item in fear of any price spiral of the item during the Ramadan.
During the last week, the local variety of onion was selling at Tk 40-Tk 42 per kg compared with its previous rates of Tk 34-Tk 36 per kg while the imported variety was selling at Tk 34-Tk 36 per kg compared with its previous rates of Tk 30-Tk 32 per kg.
Green chilli was selling at Tk 150-Tk 160 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 130-Tk 140 per kg.
Four pieces of lemon were selling at Tk 16-Tk 20 compared with its previous rates at Tk 6.0-Tk 8.0 for four pieces. Lemon prices in the city markets rose significantly due to higher demand in the holy month of Ramadan, traders said.
The fine variety of lentil was selling at Tk 76-Tk 80 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 72-Tk 74 per kg and its Turkish variety was selling at Tk 64-Tk 66 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 56-Tk 60 per kg. Prices of 'moong' pulse rose to Tk 76-Tk 78 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 70-Tk 74 per kg.
Traders said at the wholesale level soybean oil was selling at Tk 2710-Tk 2720 per maund compared with its previous rates at Tk 2700-Tk 2710 per maund, super palm oil at Tk 2660-Tk 2665 per maund compared with its previous rates at Tk 2650-Tk 2660 per maund, while palm oil was selling at Tk 2650 per maund compared with its previous rates at Tk 2620-Tk 2630 per maund.
At the retail level, canned edible oil of different brands of five litres was selling at Tk 395-Tk 400 compared with its previous rates at Tk 390-Tk 395, traders said.
At the retail level, a one-litre can of soybean oil was selling at Tk 84-Tk 86 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 80.
In the last week, brinjal was selling at Tk 48-Tk 50 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 40-Tk 42 per kg, bitter gourd at Tk 34-Tk 36 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 32-Tk 34 per kg.
Prices of snake gourd and ridge gourd rose to Tk 28-Tk 30 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 20-Tk 26 per kg, traders said at the city's Kaptan Bazar Friday.
Potato price remained unchanged in the city markets at Tk 20-Tk 21 per kg over the past week.
During the last week, at the wholesale level, prices of Indian variety of Swarna and local Paari remained unchanged at Tk 900-Tk 910 per maund, Lata variety at Tk 950-Tk 960 per maund and IRRI variety at Tk 850 per maund.
In the past week, prices of Nazirshail from Savar remained unchanged at Tk 1000 per maund, Nazirshail from North Bengal at Tk 1200 per maund and Minicate variety at Tk 1080-Tk 1100 per maund, traders said.
At the retail level, prices of fine varieties of rice remained unchanged at Tk 29-Tk 32 per kg and the coarse varieties of rice at Tk 24-Tk 25 per kg, traders said.
Eggs were selling at Tk 60 per dozen, unchanged from the previous week at the retail level. During the last week price of ginger remained unchanged at Tk 46-Tk 50 per kg.
During the last week at the retail level prices of one kilogram (kg) of packaged coarse flour remained unchanged at Tk 34 per kg.
In the last week, prices of poultry birds remained unchanged at Tk 90-Tk 100 per kg and beef at Tk 180 per kg.
During the last week a medium-size hilsa fish was selling at Tk 350-Tk 400 per piece, unchanged from the previous week.
During the last week, at the wholesale level sugar was selling at Tk 910 per maund, unchanged from the previous week.
At the retail level sugar was selling at Tk 28-Tk 30 per kg during the last week, unchanged from the previous week.
Mutton was selling at Tk 220-Tk 230 per kg, unchanged from the previous week. Traders said prices of refined salt remained unchanged at Tk 18 per kg.
