CHITTAGONG, Nov 20: Local wholesale markets has also registered a drastic downturn in price level of almost all consumer commodities in line with the gradual decline in the price of the consumer goods in the international markets. As a result, importers are facing the prospect of incurring huge financial losses, concerned sources said.
In this connection, a number of Khatunganj based trading house told the FE that the price level of some consumer items for which necessary LCs had been opened a few month back, had already dropped fifty per cent at both the local and international markets.
Moreover, as the buyers are not eager to buy some commodities , these are lying unsold at different godowns in different parts of the city.
Sources said, only a few months back, hundreds of trucks loaded with various goods used to move at Khatunganj area almost throughout the day while only a few trucks were now visible at this biggest wholesale market of the country.
In this connection, one reputed importer of Khatunganj area told this correspondent that billions of taka have already been spent and gone abroad in importing the goods. Expressing concern and disappointment he said, " How could we recover the money".
Sources further said, while importing wheat at taka 1,400 per mound the importers were compelled to sell the same at taka 800 only at this stage. Similarly in case of importing soyabean oil which used to be imported at taka 3,800 per mound was now being sold at taka 1,700 per mound in the wholesale market of Khatunganj .
On the other hand, as there was no control over the retail traders, they were rather at a liberty sell goods at prices of their own choosing, sources added.
