Prices of essentials hardly ease up in city markets

Prices of almost all essential commodities with the exception of hilsa fish remained unchanged in the city markets over the past week.
Market sources said a section of unscrupulous traders are smuggling hilsa fish out of the country. Otherwise, supply could be boosted, followed by remarkable decline in price, they said.
The government imposed a ban on export and stock of hilsa fish for next six months aiming to boost its supply in the local market and to keep price at a reasonable level.
During the last week, medium-size hilsa fishes were selling at Tk 200-Tk 345 against Tk220-Tk355 of the previous week.
Market operators said strong vigilance across the boarders is need for checking smuggling and to boost supply in the local markets in order to lower prices of the hilsa fish.
However, traders said strengthening of surveillance by the law enforcement agencies helped keep down the prices of some essentials specially vegetables in the city markets.
Being afraid of arrest and punishment by the law enforcers many traders were found to be cautious in seeking additional prices.
Earlier, security forces caught red-handed some vegetable vendors in the city markets during the manipulation of prices of green chilli and other vegetables.
During the last week at the retail level green chilli was selling at Tk 40-Tk 50 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 100-Tk 120 per kg, traders said.
Apart from this, prices of onion increased in the last week to Tk 24-Tk 26 per kg from Tk 18-Tk 22 per kg in the previous week in the city markets.
However, at the retail level, prices of brinjal remained unchanged at Tk 25-Tk 31 per kg, bitter gourd at Tk 35-Tk 40 per kg and okra, snake gourd and ridge gourd at Tk 20-Tk 25 per kg, traders said.
Potato price remained unchanged in the city markets at Tk 20-Tk 21 per kg over the past week.
During the last week at the wholesale level, soybean oil and super palm oil were selling at Tk 2470 per maund, unchanged from the previous week.
Prices of palm oil remained unchanged at Tk 2460-Tk 2470 per maund during the last week.
At the retail level, five-litre cans of edible oil of different brands were selling at Tk 365, unchanged from the previous week.
At the wholesale level sugar was selling at Tk 980 per maund, unchanged from the previous week.
At the retail level sugar was selling at Tk 29-Tk31 per kg during the last week, unchanged from the previous week.
At the retail level, prices of fine varieties of rice also remained unchanged at Tk 26-Tk 28 per kg and the coarse varieties of rice at Tk 21-Tk 22 per kg.
During the last week at the wholesale level, prices of Indian variety of Swarna and Paari remained unchanged at Tk 750-Tk 780 per maund and Lata at Tk 850-Tk 860 per maund.
Prices of IRRI variety of rice remained unchanged at Tk 700-Tk 710 per maund, Nazirshail from Savar at Tk 850-Tk 900 per maund and Nazirshail from North Bengal at Tk 920-Tk 930 per maund.
Prices of Minicate variety of rice remained unchanged at Tk 1010-1020 per maund at wholesale level, traders said.
Prices of the fine variety of lentil increased slightly to Tk 70-Tk 72 per kg and its Turkish variety was selling at Tk 56-Tk 60 per kg. Prices of 'moong' pulse remained unchanged at Tk 70-Tk 74 per kg during the last week.
During the last week ginger was selling at Tk 35-Tk 40 per kg, unchanged from the previous week. During the last week beef was selling at Tk 180 per kg, unchanged from the previous week.
Traders said garlic was selling at Tk 40-Tk 60 per kg, unchanged from the previous week.
In the last week, prices of poultry birds remained unchanged at Tk 90-Tk 100 per kg and eggs at Tk 52-Tk55 per dozen.
Mutton was selling at Tk 220-Tk 230 per kg, unchanged from the previous week.
During the last week at the retail level packaged coarse flour was selling at Tk 27-Tk 28 per kg, unchanged from the previous week in the city markets. Traders said prices of refined salt remained unchanged at Tk 18 per kg.
