Prices of essentials rise at retail level

Prices of a number of essentials including potato, rice, non-brand edible oil, garlic and poultry birds marked rise in the city markets at retail shops during the past one week, traders said Friday.
During the past one week, prices of potato increased to Tk18-Tk20 per kg from around Tk14 per kg a week ago.
A wholesaler in the city's Karwan Bazaar said prices of potato have increased sharply as stocks of the same preserved outside cold storages have almost run out.
Traders in the city markets said prices of rice increased by Tk 1.0 per kg in the last one week after BDR's announcement to raise prices of the same to Tk 30 per kg from Tk 25 per kg.
During the same period, retailers in the capital said the prices of coarse and finer varieties of rice were Tk 32-Tk34 per kg and Tk 36-Tk 46 per kg respectively against 31-Tk33 per kg and Tk 35-Tk 45 per kg respectively a week ago.
They said prices of non-brand edible oil increased marginally though the prices of pre-packed edible oil of different brands remained unchanged.
They, however, said prices of canned edible oil of different brands may increase to some extent at the retail level this week.
"Distributors of canned edible oil of some brands informed us that prices of edible oil might go up this week," a trader in the city's Karwan Bazaar said.
In the last one week, prices of canned edible oil of different brands of five litres ranged between Tk 565 and Tk 570 remaining unchanged from its previous prices a week ago.
During the same period, prices of soybean, super palm and palm oil increased by Tk2.0 and were selling at Tk114, Tk110 and Tk106 per kg respectively at Karwan Bazaar.
Traders said non-brand sugar was selling at Tk37-Tk38 per kg against Tk35-Tk36 per kg about a week ago after the news that the government proposed duty hike on import of the same.
Prices of poultry birds, however, increased to Tk 130 -- Tk150 per kg from Tk 125-Tk135 per kg about a week ago.
Prices of poultry birds went up mainly due to shortage in supply as the sector was hit hard in January-March period due to outbreak of bird flu.
Beef and mutton were selling at Tk 180-Tk 190 per kg and Tk 240-Tk 250 per kg respectively, unchanged from their previous prices a week ago.
Traders at Babubazar and Badamtoli in the city, however, said prices of coarse and finer varieties of rice are unlikely to decline further.
Over the last week, retailers in the capital said, prices of coarse and finer varieties of rice were Tk 31-Tk 33 per kg and Tk 35-Tk 45 per kg respectively remaining unchanged from their previous prices a week ago.
In the past one week, at the wholesale level, Minicate variety of rice was selling at Tk 1342-Tk 1436 (37.300 kg) against its previous rate at 1350-Tk 1460 per maund about two weeks ago. Nazirshail variety of rice was selling at Tk 1230-Tk 1600 per maund compared to its previous rate at Tk 1240-Tk 1620 per maund two weeks ago, coarse rice -Swarna (local) -- at Tk 1268-1300 per maund compared to its previous rate at Tk 1250-1290 per maund two weeks ago and BR-28 at Tk 1119- Tk 1130 per maund compared to its previous rate at Tk 1020-Tk 1030 per maund two weeks ago.
In the past one week, price of coarse flour, remaining unchanged from its previous rate a week ago, was Tk 42 per kg.
During the same period, prices of the finer variety of local lentil ranged between Tk 95 and Tk 100 against its previous rates at Tk 81 - Tk 85 per kg about a month ago. Prices of Nepalese and Turkish varieties of lentil were Tk 88-Tk 90 in the last week against Tk 75-Tk 76 per kg about a month ago.
Prices of powder milk of different brands, which soared over the last few months, remained almost unchanged in the past one week.

During the last week, best quality snake gourd, cowpea, cucumber and bitter gourd were selling at Tk 20, Tk 18, Tk 12 and Tk 20 per kg respectively remaining unchanged from their previous rates a week ago.
In the past one week, traders said, prices of local garlic were Tk95-Tk100 per kg against Tk80-Tk90 a week back while the price of the Indian one was Tk30 per kg.
During the same period, they said, prices of local onion were Tk 25-Tk 26 per kg while the prices of the Indian one remained unchanged at Tk 15-Tk 16 per kg.
