Prices of essentials still high in city markets

Prices of essential commodities maintained their previous high over the past week due to short supply of such items in the city markets because of countrywide massive flood.
The crop lands of the vegetable growing districts like Narsingdi, Manikganj and some other districts have been inundated.
As a result, both production and transportation of essential commodities have been hampered to a great extent and this has led to higher prices of those items in the city markets.
During the last week at the wholesale level prices of Indian variety of Swarna and Paari were Tk 820-Tk 850 per maund, unchanged from the previous week.
Prices of Lata variety of rice remained unchanged at Tk 900-Tk 920 per maund, IRRI variety at Tk 800-Tk 820 per maund, Nazirshail from Savar at Tk 900-Tk 950 per maund and Nazirshail from North Bengal at Tk 980-Tk 1000 per maund. Prices of Minicate variety of rice remained unchanged at Tk 1050 per maund.
At the retail level, fine varieties of rice remained unchanged at Tk 28-Tk 29 per kg and the coarse varieties of rice at Tk 22-Tk 23 per kg.
During the last week, at the wholesale level prices of soybean oil remained unchanged at Tk 2720-Tk 2740 per maund, super palm oil at Tk 2700 per maund and palm oil at Tk 2650 per maund.
During the last week at the retail level prices of one kilogram (kg) of packaged coarse flour remained unchanged at Tk 30 per kg and two-kg packet at Tk 60.
At the retail level, five-litres cans of edible oil of different brands were selling at Tk 380-Tk 385, unchanged from the previous week. During the last week green chilli was selling at Tk 160-Tk 180 per kg, unchanged from the previous week.
During the last week, at the retail level, prices of brinjal remained unchanged at Tk 40-Tk 48 per kg, bitter gourd at Tk 36-Tk 40 per kg, and snake gourd and ridge gourd at Tk 28-Tk 30 per kg, traders said.
Potato price remained unchanged in the city markets at Tk 20-Tk 21 per kg over the past week. Eggs were selling at Tk 60 per dozen, unchanged from the previous week.
Prices of the fine variety of lentil remained unchanged at Tk 72-Tk 74 per kg and its Turkish variety at Tk 56-Tk 60 per kg. Prices of 'moong' pulse remained unchanged at Tk 70-Tk 74 per kg during the last week.
During the last week price of ginger remained unchanged at Tk 50-Tk 60 per kg, onion at Tk 30-Tk 32 per kg and garlic at Tk 60 per kg.
In the last week, prices of poultry birds remained unchanged at Tk 90-Tk 100 per kg and beef at Tk 180 per kg.
During the last week, at the wholesale level sugar was selling at Tk 910 per maund, unchanged from the previous week. At the retail level sugar was selling at Tk 28-Tk 30 per kg during the last week, unchanged from the previous week.
Mutton was selling at Tk 220-Tk 230 per kg, unchanged from the previous week. Traders said prices of refined salt remained unchanged at Tk 18 per kg.
