Prices of essentials up in Rajshahi kitchen mkts

RAJSHAHI, Aug 2: The prices of almost all essential commodities, including all kinds of vegetables, shot up in the kitchen markets in the district last week, adding woes to poor folks.

Of them, the prices of rice, maize, pulses, edible oil, chicken and eggs,

okra, bitter gourd, sweet gourd, green peeper and leafy vegetables marked an abnormal rise in the city's kitchen markets.

According to sources at the city's Shaheb Bazaar and RDA market wholesale rice depot, the prices of all varieties of rice shot up by Tk 50-Tk 60 per maunds.

The Paijam and Minicate varieties of rice, which had been sold at between Tk 3,050 and Tk 3,200 per sack ( 84 kilogram) in the previous week, were selling at between Tk 3,200 and Tk 3,350 per sack Saturday.

Different varieties of coarse rice such as BR-28, Swarna, etc. were also selling at between Tk 36 and Tk 37 against Tk 34 and Tk 35 of the previous week.

The price of wheat which had registered a slight fall last week remained stable this week. Atta was being sold at Tk

38 by the retailers.

The prices of edible oils, including Soyabean, Palm and mustard oil,

also registered a sudden hike in the city kitchen markets. Soyabean oil was selling at between Tk 120 and Tk 125 per litre, palm oil at Tk 100 and mustard oil at Tk 140 per litre respectively.

The prices of beef and mutton, however, remained unchanged

in the city markets and were selling at Tk 180 and Tk 250 respectively.

The prices of chicken and eggs also rose abnormally in local kitchen markets. The local variety of chicken was being sold at Tk 200

per kilogram while eggs were selling at Tk 6.0 apiece.

Traders said prices of finer varieties of local lentil ranged between Tk 100 and Tk 110 against its previous rates at Tk 95 a week ago.

Nepalese and Turkish varieties of lentils were selling at between Tk 88 and Tk 90, unchanged from the previous week.

The prices of all varieties of babyfood also rose to new highs

last week. The prices of Lactogen-ii ( 400 gram) of Nestle increased by Tk 20 to Tk 365, Fresh Babyfood, Dano and Serelac (400 gram) were selling at between Tk 208 and Tk 225, and Tk 270 and Tk 280 respectively.

The price of local variety of onion had increased by Tk 4.0 to 6.0 per kilogram and were selling at between Tk 30 and Tk 35 respectively while the Indian onions were at Tk 25 per kg.
