Prices of lentil rise further in city markets

Prices of lentil, non-brand super palm oil, baby food of a brand, garlic (local) and turmeric marked rise while prices of flour and poultry birds declined slightly in the city's retail markets during the last one week, traders said Friday.

Prices of different essential items including rice and edible oil remained almost unchanged at their previous rates at retail shops in the city markets, traders of different retail markets said.

Traders said prices of lentil increased by Tk 10-Tk 8 per kg.

Traders said, prices of the finer variety of local lentil ranged between Tk 100 and Tk 110 against its previous rates at Tk 95-Tk 100 per kg a week ago. Prices of Nepalese and Turkish varieties of lentil were Tk 88-Tk 90 in the last week against Tk 75-Tk 76 per kg about a month ago.

They, however, said prices of baby food of different brands might increase to some extent at the retail level this week.

In the week, prices of Lactogen-ii (400 kilogram) of Nestle increased by Tk 20 to Tk 365.

Prices of garlic increased by Tk 200 per maund (40kg). Garlic was selling at Tk 1000 per maund at wholesale level. At retail market, garlic was selling at Tk 25-Tk 30 per kg against the previous price of Tk 20-Tk 22. Turmeric was selling at Tk 80 per kg at wholesale level but the price at retail market was varying between Tk 100 and Tk 120.

During the same period, prices of poultry birds went down in the last week and ranged between Tk 115 and Tk 120 per kg against Tk 130-Tk 150 per kg about a week ago.

A number of traders in the city markets said prices of poultry birds went down over the week because poultry farmers were selling their birds for upcoming rainy season.

Traders in the city's Babubazar and Badamtoli wholesale markets said prices of rice continued to show an upward trend after BDR's announcement to raise prices of coarse rice to Tk 30 per kg from Tk 25 per kg previously.

But in the last week, they said, prices of rice remained unchanged at the retail shops in the city markets.

During the same period, retailers in the capital said, prices of coarse and finer varieties of rice were Tk 32-Tk 34 per kg and Tk 36-Tk 46 per kg against 31-Tk 33 per kg and Tk 35-Tk 45 per kg respectively a week ago.

In the past one week, at the wholesale level, Minicate variety of rice was selling at Tk 1492-Tk 1566 (37.300 kg) against its previous rate at Tk 1400-Tk 1460 per maund about a week ago. Nazirshail variety of rice was selling at Tk 1417-Tk 1454 per maund compared to its previous rate at Tk 1370-Tk 1400 per maund a week ago and BR-28 at Tk 1156- Tk 1160 per maund compared to its previous rate at Tk 1020-Tk 1030 per maund a week ago.

In the past one week, traders said, prices of coarse flour, which declined by Tk 1-Tk 2.0, were Tk 40-Tk 41 per kg against Tk 42 a week ago.

In the same week prices of canned edible oil of different brands of five litres ranged between Tk 565 and Tk 570 remaining unchanged at its previous price a week ago.

Prices of non-brand soybean oil and palm oil, also remaining unchanged from their previous prices, were Tk 114 and Tk 106 per kg respectively at Karwan Bazaar in the last week.

But price of non-brand super palm oil increased by Tk 30 per maund (37.3kg) at wholesale level and was Tk 3820 against its previous rate of Tk 3790 per maund.

During the same period, they said, prices of local onion were Tk 25-Tk 26 per kg while the prices of the Indian one remained unchanged at Tk 15-Tk 16 per kg.

Prices of a number of fresh summer vegetable items that flooded the city markets remained almost unchanged at their previous rates a week ago.

During the last week, best quality snake gourd, cowpea, cucumber and bitter gourd were selling at Tk 20, Tk 18, Tk 12 and Tk 20 per kg respectively, remaining almost unchanged at their previous rates a week ago.

Prices of potato were Tk 17-Tk 18 per kg remaining unchanged at their previous prices a week ago.

Beef and mutton were selling at Tk 180-Tk 190 per kg and Tk 240-Tk 250 per kg respectively, unchanged from their previous prices a week ago.
