Prices of most essentials register 28pc rise on an average over last one year

Prices of most of the essential commodities registered a 28 per cent rise on an average over the last one year according to government statistics, sources said.
They said the statistics prepared by state owned Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) shows that the prices of rice, flour, edible oil, lentil, milk and onion, among other commodities, marked a sharp rise during the last one year.
Sources said price of rice increased by 23.32 per cent on an average to Tk 21-Tk 30 per kg from Tk17-Tk 26 per kg last year.
Compared to the previous year, price of onion registered a record hike by 57 per cent to Tk 25-30 per kg from Tk15-Tk 22 per kg.
Prices of flour rose by about 55 per cent to Tk29-31 per kg from Tk18-Tk24 of previous year.
Soybean and palm oil prices increased by 51 percent to Tk70-Tk76 per kg from Tk45-Tk53 during the last one.
Prices of both locally produced and imported lentil increased to Tk60-Tk76 per kg from Tk55-Tk64 per kg previously showing a rise by about 11 per cent.
With about 38 per cent rise, price of per kg milk powder increased to Tk385-Tk480 from Tk265-Tk370 per kg during the last one year.
Apart from this, prices of potato, gram, pepper, beef, mutton, broiler, egg and hilsa fish also registered a rise by about 11.43 per cent, 11.32 per cent, 20.93 per cent, 17.24 per cent, 29.73 per cent, 13.0 per cent, 5.71 per cent and 58.54 per cent.
Referring to the TCB statistics, sources said, only prices of sugar, ruhi fish, turmeric and garlic marked a decline by about 34 per cent, 9 per cent, 3 per cent and 20.83 per cent respectively to Tk27-Tk29, Tk120-Tk170, Tk60-Tk70 and Tk40-Tk55.
The report, however, said that only the price of salt has remained unchanged compared to that of the previous year.
When asked, official sources said prices of some essentials increased due to the price hike of those in the international market.
But, they further said the prices of some other essentials increased as supply was insufficient against the demand.
Besides intense monitoring, official sources said, the government should take measures to boost supply at retail level.
The prices of the sugar that rose to Tk60-70 last year declined substantially following adequate supply now, they said.
When asked sources said the ministries concerned and the office of the chief adviser has been sent this report on price hike of essentials for their information and necessary action.
