Prices of most essentials still high

Prices of loose edible oil and onion decreased, while those of other daily essentials including rice, vegetables and spices remain unchanged in the city's kitchen markets, traders said Friday. Traders said loose soybean witnessed a downward trend by Tk 1-2 per kg and was selling at Tk 115-116 per kg. Palm oil was selling at Tk 100-102 and super palm at Tk 116 per kg. But the packed variety maintained the earlier trend. A one-litre container sold at Tk 116 and a two-litre container at Tk 228 last week. A can containing five litres of brand soybean oil such as Rupchanda, Teer and Pusti sold between Tk 570 and Tk 580. Prices of onion further witnessed a down trend by Tk 2 per kg, traders said availability of the imported Indian variety pushed the item prices down in the city's kitchen markets. The local variety was selling at Tk 22 per kg, while the imported variety sold at Tk 16-18 per kg. Prices of rice both coarse and fine maintained the same trend in the city's kitchen market, traders said. Minicate was selling at Tk 50-52 per kg and Nazirshail at Tk 48-55, Paizam at Tk 42, Lata at Tk 42-44 and BR 28 at Tk 42 per kg and IRRI at Tk 34-36 per kg last week. Sugar was selling at Tk 58-60 per kg at the retailers' level in the city. Prices of Atta and Maida except the unpacked flour maintained the same trend last week in the city's kitchen markets. Unpacked flour (Atta) was selling at Tk 31-32 per kg down by Tk 1.0 per kg, while packed variety was selling at Tk 36 per kg. Unpacked refined flour (Maida) was selling at Tk 36-37 per kg and packed Maida at Tk 41 per kg last week. Prices of garlic and ginger also witnessed the same trend. The imported garlic was selling at Tk 140 per kg and the local one at Tk 80-90 per kg last week. Ginger ranged between Tk 70 and Tk 80 per kg. The price of four pieces of farm eggs was Tk 24, up from Tk 22-23 the week before. Local lentil was selling between Tk 80 and Tk 110 per kg depending on quality. Dry chili was selling at Tk 170-200 per kg and turmeric ranged between Tk 280 and Tk 300 per kg. A pair of medium-sized hilsha was selling at Tk 700-800, shrimp at Tk 280-450 per kg, 'ruhi' at Tk 230-250 per kg and 'pangas' at Tk 80-90 per kg.
