Prices of most essentials unchanged, vegetables cheaper

Prices of most of the essential commodities including rice, edible oil and coarse flour remained almost unchanged while prices of vegetables recorded a slight fall at the retail level in the city markets during the last week.
Prices of fishes recorded a slight rise in the city markets Friday as hilsha prices suddenly rose to some extent following the government's assurance of considering lifting the ban on export of the same to India, market sources said.
The price of a medium-size hilsha was Tk 180-200 against its previous price of Tk 150-Tk 160 in the city markets Friday.
Market sources said prices of rice and onion, which recorded a significant rise in the country recently, might decline slowly as the Indian government has assured Bangladesh of considering lifting the embargo on export of the commodity.
According to the sources, the approval of the advisory committee on public purchase to buy 113,000 tonnes of rice Thursday might also impact on the market price of rice at the retail level.
At the wholesale level prices of rice declined by Tk 5-Tk 10 per maund last week, though it left no impact on prices at the retail level.
Talking to the FE Friday, Md Gholam Mostafa, a rice wholesaler at Badda in the city, said prices of rice are expected to decline in the next 15 days.
Wholesale rice traders at the city's Badamtali Wholesale Market told the FE that there was no possibility of any further hike in rice price in the lean season of paddy.
They said the growers in many areas of the country are expected to start harvesting of Aman paddy by the end of this month.
During the last week, at the wholesale level, the Minicate variety of rice was selling at about Tk 1,145 per maund (37.50-38 kg) against the previous rate of Tk 1,080 per maund one month ago. The Nazirshail variety of rice was selling at Tk 1,310 per maund compared with the previous rate of Tk 1,250 per maund, Indian Swarna was selling at Tk 870 per maund against the previous Tk 830 per maund, BRRI at Tk 825 per maund against Tk 760 per maund and Lata variety of rice Tk 905 per maund against the previous rate of Tk 850 per maund.
At the retail level, prices of the coarse variety of rice ranged from Tk 25-Tk 26 and the finer variety of rice Tk 34-Tk 41 per kg, traders said.
At the retail level onion was selling at Tk 60 per kg compared with its previous rate of Tk 54-Tk 55 per kg of one month ago.
Prices of edible oil remained unchanged after registering a slight rise at the end of last month mainly due to price hike of the item in the international markets.
Over the past week, at the wholesale level soybean oil was selling at Tk 3,100-Tk 3,120 per maund compared with its previous range at Tk 2940-Tk 2950 per maund. Super palm oil was selling at Tk 2940-Tk 2950 per maund against the previous Tk 2820-Tk 2830 per maund and the palm oil at Tk 2850 per maund against the previous Tk 2760-Tk 2780 per maund.
At the retail level, prices of five-litre canned edible oil of different brands remained unchanged at Tk 450-Tk 455.
However, shoppers alleged that the retailers were still charging higher price than the rate on the pack despite monitoring by the authorities concerned.
At the wholesale level prices of sugar remained almost unchanged. It was selling at Tk 1065-Tk 1090 per maund against Tk 1020-Tk 1025 per maund a month ago.
At the retail level locally-produced sugar was selling at Tk 32 per kg compared with its previous rates of Tk 28-Tk 30 per kg of last month. Brown sugar was selling at Tk 35.
Eggplant was priced at Tk 30-Tk 35 per kg against the previous range of Tk 36-Tk 40 per kg. Green chilli that recorded a significant rise was selling at Tk 50-Tk 55 per kg against the previous price of Tk 100-Tk 120 per kg two weeks ago.
Besides, coriander leaf was selling at Tk 150-Tk 160 per kg. Newly-arrived potato was priced at Tk 58-Tk 60 per kg Friday while prices of previously-stocked potato declined by Tk 1-Tk 2 and was selling at Tk 22-Tk 23.
Prices of bitter gourd also declined by Tk 5/6 from its previous rate of Tk 36-Tk 37 per kg. Small-size cabbage and cauliflower were selling at Tk 15-Tk 16 and Tk 30-Tk 32 a piece respectively, traders said.
The newly-arrived seasonal vegetable items like red amaranth, cauliflower and gourds were still selling at higher prices in the city markets during the last week despite their adequate supply.
Prices of the fine variety of local lentil remained unchanged at Tk 76-Tk 80 per kg and its Turkish variety at Tk 70 per kg.
At the retail level prices of one kilogramme (kg) of packed coarse flour was selling at Tk 39-Tk 40 from its previous price of Tk 35-Tk 36 per kg of two weeks ago.
Prices of poultry birds remained unchanged at Tk 90-Tk 100 per kg and beef at Tk 180 per kg. Mutton was selling at Tk 220-Tk 230 per kg, unchanged from that of the previous week.
Prices of liquid milk of various brands ranged between Tk 37 and Tk 42, up from its prices of Tk 36-Tk 40.
