Prices of onion, ginger, lentil rise in city market

Prices of onion, ginger and lentil increased at the retail level during the last week while prices of rice, different brands of edible oil and egg declined.
Besides, prices of other essential commodities, including vegetable, 'atta' and non-brand edible oil remained almost unchanged in the city's kitchen markets during the past week, traders said Friday.
Prices of onion increased by Tk 4.0-Tk 6.0 per kg because of less production of the local onion, according to traders in the city's retail markets.
On Friday, a kilogramme of local onion was selling at prices ranging between Tk 42 and Tk 44, which was selling at Tk 38-Tk 40 one week back. Besides, imported Indian onion's prices ranged between Tk 28 and Tk 30 in the city's retail markets. Garlic was selling at prices between Tk 38 and Tk 45 per kg.
Prices of ginger had shown an upward trend in the retail level during the last week and now, local ginger is selling at Tk 50-Tk 55 per kg and imported ginger at Tk 40- Tk 45 per kg on an average in the city's kitchen markets.
Traders said prices of local and imported lentil increased by Tk 5.0-Tk 8.0 per kg at the retail level during the past week. A kilogramme of local lentil was selling at Tk 98-Tk 110 and imported lentil at Tk 88-Tk 98 on an average at the city's retail outlets.
On the other hand, prices of different coarse and fine varieties of rice declined by Tk 1.0-Tk 2.0 per kg on an average at the retail level during the last week as the government declared starting of Open Market Sale (OMS) of rice at upazila level across the country for low-income people from mid-March.
According to different retail traders, coarse varieties of rice, especially BR-28 were selling at Tk 25-Tk 27, Pari at Tk 24-Tk 25, 'paizam' at Tk 26-Tk 27 and Swarna at Tk 21-Tk 22 on an average at the city's retail level.
Besides, prices of fine varieties of rice including 'minicate' variety of rice were Tk 35-Tk 36 per kg and Nazirshail Tk 34-Tk 36 per kg on an average in the city's retail markets during the last week.
A number of traders in the city's retail markets said prices of different brands of edible oil in five-litre cans declined by Tk 5.0 and were between Tk 370 and Tk 375 in the city's kitchen markets last week.
During the last week, non-brand edible oils such as soyabean oil and super palm oil were selling at Tk 78-Tk 80 and Tk 62-Tk 65 per kg respectively on an average in the city's retail markets.
Prices of eggs have shown downward trend at the city's retail markets. A dozen of eggs were selling at Tk 80 -Tk 81 on an average, which was Tk 84 to Tk 90.
Besides, prices of poultry birds were Tk 125-Tk 140 per kg on an average in the city's retail markets during the week. A kilogramme of beef was priced at Tk 220 and mutton at Tk 320-Tk 330 per kg.
On Friday, a kilogramme of lady's finger was selling at Tk 24-Tk 28, brinjal at Tk 22-Tk24, papaya at Tk 15 and a medium-sized cauliflower at Tk 15-Tk 20, according to traders in the city's retail markets.
Cucumber was being sold at prices between Tk 16 and Tk 20 per kg, tomato at prices between Tk 18 and Tk 22 per kg, beans at Tk 20-Tk 22, radish at Tk 12-Tk 15 and bitter gourd at Tk 28- Tk30.
A kg of potato was being sold at Tk 14-Tk 16 on an average in the retail outlets. Green chili was selling at Tk 30 per kg during the week on an average.
