Prices of onion, green chilli, vegetables rise in city

Prices of onion, green chilli and vegetables increased and the prices of edible oil and ginger declined slightly while the prices of other essential commodities remained unchanged in the city markets over the past week.
Traders said prices of onion and vegetables increased due to higher demand ahead of the Ramadan and flood.
During the last week the local variety of onion was selling at Tk 34-Tk36 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 30-Tk32 per kg while its imported variety was selling at Tk 30-Tk32 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 28-Tk30 per kg.
Traders said normally the prices of onion increase in the markets ahead of the Ramadan as consumption of this item also increases substantially.
On the other hand, prices of the green chilli again registered increase due to higher demand ahead of the Ramadan and also due to disruption in production in its lean season following the recent countrywide flood.
However, green chilli was selling at Tk 130-Tk140 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 100-Tk120 per kg.
During the last week, prices of some vegetable items went up ahead of the Ramadan as the demand of such items increases for preparing mouth-watering Iftar items.
At the retail level, brinjal was selling at Tk 40-Tk 44 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 30-Tk36 per kg, bitter gourd at Tk 32-Tk34 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 28-Tk30 per kg.
Prices of snake gourd and ridge gourd increased to Tk28-Tk30 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 20-Tk26 per kg, traders said at the city's Kaptan Bazar Friday.
Potato price remained unchanged in the city markets at Tk 20-Tk21 per kg over the past week.
The prices of edible oil have started to decline in the local market due to strengthening of market surveillance by the members of the law enforcing agencies and selling of the item in fair prices shops in a massive scale in the city and district towns by the personnel of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and Ansar.
"It is a matter of surprise for Bangladeshi consumers that the prices of edible oil have been declining gradually in the international market also. The supply of edible oil in Bangladesh is so far good. I hope there will not be any crisis of edible oil in the local markets during the ensuing Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr as the supply is satisfactory until now," said a trader at the city's Moulvi Bazar Friday.
Traders said at the wholesale level, soybean oil was selling at Tk 2700-Tk2710 per maund compared with its previous rates at Tk 2750-Tk2760 per maund, super palm oil at Tk 2650-Tk2660 per maund compared with its previous rates at Tk 2,700 per maund while palm oil was selling at Tk 2620-Tk2630 per maund compared with its previous rates at Tk 2,660 per maund, traders said.
At the retail level, canned edible oil of different brands of five litres was selling at Tk 390-Tk395 compared with its previous rates at Tk 400-Tk410, traders said.
At the retail level, a one-litre can of edible oil was selling at Tk 84-Tk86 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 90-Tk 95.
During the last week price of ginger declined to Tk 46 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 50-Tk60 per kg, traders said.
During the last week, at the wholesale level, prices of Indian variety of Swarna and local Paari remained unchanged at Tk 900-Tk 910 per maund, Lata variety at Tk 950-Tk960 per maund and IRRI variety at Tk 850 per maund.
In the past week, prices of Nazirshail from Savar remained unchanged at Tk 1000 per maund, Nazirshail from North Bengal at Tk 1200 per maund and Minicate variety at Tk 1080-Tk1100 per maund, traders said.
At the retail level, prices of fine varieties of rice remained unchanged at Tk 29-Tk32 per kg and the coarse varieties of rice at Tk 24-Tk25 per kg, traders said.
Eggs were selling at Tk 60 per dozen, unchanged from the previous week at the retail level.
During the last week at the retail level prices of one kilogram (kg) of packaged coarse flour remained unchanged at Tk34 per kg.
Prices of the fine variety of lentil remained unchanged at Tk 72-Tk74 per kg and its Turkish variety at Tk 56-Tk60 per kg. Prices of 'moog' pulse remained unchanged at Tk 70-Tk 74 per kg during the last week.
In the last week, prices of poultry birds remained unchanged at Tk 90-Tk100 per kg and beef at Tk 180 per kg.
During the last week a medium-size hilsa fish was selling at Tk 350-Tk400, unchanged from the previous week.
During the last week at the wholesale level sugar was selling at Tk 910 per maund, unchanged from the previous week.
At the retail level sugar was selling at Tk28-Tk30 per kg during the last week, unchanged from the previous week.
Mutton was selling at Tk 220-Tk 230 per kg, unchanged from the previous week. Traders said prices of refined salt remained unchanged at Tk 18 per kg.
